HISTORIC LYON VILLAGE
Lyon Village is one of Arlington’s most distinctive and historic residential neighborhoods, with its modern development dating to the early 20th century. In 1923, prominent local developer Frank Lyon began transforming the former Cruitt Estate into a carefully planned suburban community. The neighborhood was divided into nine sections, with landscaped traffic circles, gently sloping lots, winding streets, and dedicated green space helping shape its appealing residential character. Its growth reflected the rapid expansion of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area during the early decades of the 20th century.
Over time, Lyon Village developed an architectural identity that remains one of its defining features. The neighborhood includes Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Craftsman, Spanish Mission, bungalow, and American Foursquare homes, creating streetscapes that reflect several important periods in Arlington’s residential history. Mature trees, established landscaping, sidewalks, and distinctive street patterns contribute to a setting that feels peaceful and welcoming despite its close proximity to major commercial areas. The Lyon Village Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
Built in 1949, the Lyon Village Community House hosts a variety of community events, including civic association meetings, holiday parties, and an annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser.
